Spiritual Gifts

This week is going to be a little different than expected. I was going to go through and look at the individual gifts to see whether people were talented in these areas. However, upon studying Scripture on Spiritual Gifts, I think I missed the boat on what Paul was actually talking about in reference to those gifts. So, instead of tackling them one by one, today we are going to shift gears and speed up this sermon series. We’re going to learn the lesson that I did this week.

Have you ever gotten so wrapped up in a project that you lost sight of where you were intending to go? There is a story of a drunk who was walking and approached a police officer on the street corner and said, “Pardon me, officer, but where am I?” “Well,” the officer replied, “you’re at the corner of Main and Forsyth.” The drunk scoffed and replied, “Never mind the details! Spiritual Gifts: Wisdom

Have you ever had someone in your life that you thought was really wise? So wise in fact that you said something like this, “Boy, when I am his age, I pray that I am half as wise as him!” For me, that person is my grandpa. This week is wisdom, next week is knowledge, followed by distinguishing of spirits, or discernment. They are so much alike, that many don’t quite know the difference between them. So, as is …

Spiritual Gifts: Different Types and the Family Unit

We are doing things a touch different this morning. I’m going to start by reading the Scripture for the day first. It’s going to be 1 Corinthians 12:1-31b. God kinda changed my mind this week. I had everything lined out and then mid-week he goes, “direction change!!!” Slight that it was, I just combined this week and next week’s sermon. If you would, follow along, 1 Corinthians 12:1-31b.

12 Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant. 2 You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols. 3 Therefore I tell you that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.
4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men.
7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given…
